Skrym wins Test Drive Climate Action and a spot in Sting’s climate accelerator

Yesterday, the Startup Climate Action initiative concluded with the finale in the Test Drive program. Nineteen startup teams pitched their business ideas to an experienced jury of investors and climate experts. Skrym, which solves a fundamental problem in eCommerce – getting rid of the air in packages, won and secured a place in Sting’s new accelerator focusing on climate change.

During four evening workshops, 19 companies with climate solutions ranging from green transport, sustainable materials, circular economy and energy efficiency have further developed and validated their business ideas. The teams were selected among 52 ideas in the Startup Climate Action’s Deep Dive phase.

Skrym, the winner of Test Drive Climate Action, combines different sources of underutilized data to solve a fundamental problem in eCommerce – getting rid of the air in packages, while cutting both costs and emissions.

– It feels great to have received this confirmation and trust in our business model, and by joining the Sting Accelerate Climate Action program we hope to scale our impact rapidly. We need to invest in sustainability and resource efficiency solutions in areas that lack the hype of new energy solutions or next-generation vehicles, for example. No one starts selling online because they want to think about logistics and packaging, so there are plenty of opportunities to help the e-commerce sector become more sustainable – and we look forward to driving that change.

Skrym was selected as winner by the following jury consisting of experienced investors and climate experts:

  • Karin Edström, Investment Manager, Almi Invest Greentech
  • Agate Freimane, General Partner, Norrsken VC
  • Maria Ljungberg, CEO, Propel Capital
  • Magnus Rehn, Business Coach, Sting
  • Jane Walerud, Partner, Walerud Ventures
  • Prof. Henrik Österblom, Science Director, Stockholm Resilience Center

The jury’s motivation read: “With a scalable solution ready to go, simple and straight forward approach, and high rankings in business and market potential with a true climate impact, Skrym is addressing an industry in big need of innovative ideas and solutions.”

The jury also rewarded two runners-up with a direct invitation to the pitch finals for the Sting Accelerate Climate Action program; Retrofit, which is making the transition to emission-free electric motorcycles more affordable and sustainable for developing countries, and Cling Systems that enables traceable and safe electric vehicle battery recycling.

Additionally, the aucience voted and selected Penaka Solar as the winner of the “People’s Choice” award. Penaka Solar combines three sustainable business domains: agriculture, solar and water into an efficient, mutually profitable module, all on the same piece of land, in a way that has never been done before.

Test Drive Climate Action has been a collaboration between Sting and Norrsken Foundation. During the workshops, the teams have learned about and been coached in sales, pitching, financing and business development. Additionally, they have gained insights and inspiration from successful climate action companies such as Midsummer, CaCharge and CorPower Ocean.

– It has been an incredible Test Drive program with so many exciting ideas. All the teams impressed us and did a fantastic job at the final event as well as throughout the program. It has also been encouraging to see so many people and organizations supporting Startup Climate Action from the launch in June to the Test Drive grand finale, and also to see all these new impact startups being formed and starting their journeys, which indicates a clear need for initiatives like this.
