An automatic anti-money laundering process, sustainable modular houses, safer medical tubes, programmable accessories and new financing solutions for companies – these are some of the products and services that the 14 innovative companies in the spring’s round of Sting Incubate and Sting Accelerate represent. The list of companies is announced today when the entrepreneurs meet for the first time in Sting’s offices at A house.

– It is an exciting range of innovative solutions among this group of very strong companies in B2B and B2C this time. We see interesting trends in the fintech area, where several of the companies are active, says Fredrik Rosengren, program manager for Sting Accelerate.

The companies that are admitted to Sting can get an investment of SEK 300,000 from Propel Capital, Sweden’s most active private seed investor. In addition to the actual investment, the companies also get direct access to the 40 business angels behind Propel Capital, as well as their networks.

In addition, the companies receive individual coaching in business development and financing, support in recruitment, and access to Sting’s broad international network of industrial contacts and investors. They also get free office space for six months at A house, which provides a strong community with each other and the Sting team.

One of the companies in this spring batch is ImagiLabs. They build a community and tools to teach more young girls to program.

Newsvoice.com, a news app that aims to change the way we read the news, raises 2 million SEK from private business angels and Almi Invest for further expansion of their service.

Newsvoice.com is a news app and a community that provides links to high quality articles with different perspectives, in one place. The service acts as a mix of Google News, Reddit and Wikipedia and is intially targeted at the US market. The company was founded just over a year ago by Viktor Lidholt, who has a background from Google in Silicon Valley.

Moreover, we always display news from multiple perspectives. For example, if you want to read about the conflict in Syria, we can provide the reader perspectives on the news from the US, Russia, Europe and the Middle East, creating a better understanding of how the issue is perceived in various parts of the world, says Viktor Lidholt, founder and CEO of Newsvoice.com.

The round was led by ReadSoft founder Lars Appelstål, who invested along with BLCBX Investment Group and a number of private business angels. Almi Invest also contributed 300,000 SEK. Propel Capital has previously invested in Newsvoice.com.

– I think Newsvoice.com has both the ability and the right product to make a real difference in the media landscape. They are creating a global platform that can solve many of the problems that are present today, from filter bubbles to fake news, says Lars Appelstål.

– We are at the beginning of our journey and our vision is to fundamentally change people consume news. The potential is enormous. Not only because we have a strong product, but also because there is a real need, says Viktor Lidholt.

Propel Capital III launches, will finance 25-30 startups in Stockholm

Par_Hedberg_Niclas_Lilja_Ludvig_Linge-1024x479Propel Capital I and II has since 2014 funded 33 startups linked to STING and is thereby Sweden’s largest private seed investor. In August, Propel Capital III is launched that will invest in 25-30 new STING companies until 2017. This concept is extended to include startups in the program STING Accelerate (Internet/media companies) and STING Incubate (startups with technological innovations).

Propel Capital connects private investors and entrepreneurs. With their own limited inputs some 20 investors can take part of Stockholm’s startup scene and fund carefully evaluated startup companies. Financing is made through a convertible note of 300 000 SEK that can be exchanged for shares. The companies also get business development support by STING to get a good start on their growth journey.

– The journey to attract investors to Propel Capital III has been fast, and we are almost fully invested already. Half of the investors come from Propel I and II, and half are new business angels, says Pär Hedberg, founder and CEO of STING (Stockholm Innovation & Growth).

Ludvig Linge, co-founder of TAT (The Astonishing Tribe), which in 2011 was sold to Blackberry, is one of the investors in Propel Capital I, II and III and sees major benefits with the arrangement.

– Propel Capital is a very simple way to broaden my investor network while I’m exposed to many really good entrepreneurs and companies in a fun and effective way. The positive experience of Propel Capital I and II means that I have chosen to invest also in Propel Capital III, says Ludvig Linge.

Niclas Lilja, founder of Forest Avenue, which invests in technology companies, has also been involved in all rounds.

– Propel is a verb that means to drive something forward. It captures the idea of Propel Capital, namely to help young companies take off early. At the same time, it has given investors a good opportunity to get to know many companies and entrepreneurs in Stockholm’s tech scene, says Niclas Lilja.

Propel Capital, with its 33 investments, the largest seed investors within Internet and media. The portfolio has performed well, and of the 17 companies that were adopted the first year, 14 attracted a total of over 40 million from other investors. One example is Sellpy that makes it easy and painless to get rid of gadgets and clothes that are no longer used. Sellpy was founded in 2014 and today already has over 50 employees and a growing turnover.

– The investment from Propel was a welcomed financial contribution that helped take Sellpy from concept to product. But even more important was the availability of people with extensive experience in both industry and in building companies. Propel Capital is a large network with many talented individuals and the availability of this experience has been very valuable to us, says Michael Arnör, co-founder and CEO of Sellpy.

Launching Propel Capital II, investment increased to 300K SEK per company

Sting FastForward Demo Day 150120

STINGs investment company Propel Capital, Propel Capital II, will in the next stage increase the investment sum from 250 000 SEK to 300 000 SEK. The company invests in every company that is incorporated into STINGs accelerator program STING Accelerate (previously FastForward). Propel II includes several respected and knowledgeable business angels and will invest in in a total of 16 startups in the autumn of 2015 and spring 2016.

STING established the investment company Propel Capital in the autumn of 2014 to make it easier for entrepreneurs in STINGs accelerator program to raise capital and instead focus on developing their companies at a faster rate. Propel Capital II will invest 300 000 SEK in each company that is incorporated into STING Accelerate in the autumn of 2015 and spring 2016. The investment in the companies is made through convertible notes.

A few of the new business angels that have invested in Propel Capital are:

  • Ola Lauritzson, Entrepreneur and Author
  • Marcus Wallén, KING
  • Simon Josefsson, Data- and Network Security Consultant

They are joining a group of notable investors that were also part of Propel Capital I. Among these are Magnus Bergman, investor in Prezi and Truecaller; Erik Byrenius, founder of OnlinePizza and Carl Palmstierna, one of Sweden’s most active business angels.

An investment in Propel is an opportunity for the investors to gain access to 16 of Sweden’s most promising startups in the fields of internet/media, gaming and mobile.

– The first round of Propel Capital offered me the opportunity to meet and invest in a professional selection of interesting entrepreneurs, something I never would have been able to do as a sole business angel. Propel Capital II is a natural step to meet more entrepreneurs and network with other qualified business angels, says Jan-Eric Ramberg, serial entrepreneur and investor in both Propel Capital I and II.

In recent years, STING has increasingly invested in building an accelerator with an attractive offer for startups within internet/media. The vision is that STING Accelerate, with the help of Propel Capital, will contribute to Stockholm expanding even further as the hub for startups in Europe.

– It is very pleasing that an additional number of qualified business angels choose to invest in Propel Capital II. It will give the companies in our accelerator program access to more competence and a slightly higher amount than previously, says Pär Hedberg, founder and CEO of STING.

In addition to the 300 000 SEK, the companies in STING Accelerate will gain access to 16 very qualified Propel investors. The business angels are also entrepreneurs with competencies within internet/media. They can make direct investments and further engage in the companies where they can make an impact, both through their own competencies and via their networks.
